IMU Breakout Graduate Fellowship Program

The International Mathematical Union (IMU) Breakout Graduate Fellowship Program is implemented by the IMU in partnership with the Worldwide Friends of the International Mathematical Union. This fellowship program is primarily designed to offer expert support to outstanding and mathematically strong at the doctoral level students from underdeveloped nations to complete their studies in mathematics.

The IMU Breakout Graduate Fellowship Program has fully funded PhD scholarships for international students who wish to undertake mathematical studies at doctorate level. Building the most capable future mathematicians who will be educated and mentored by the fellowship aims to develop the field of mathematics across developing countries.

Eligible Program

  • The fellowship supports doctoral programs in mathematics in any country worldwide.
  • Nominees can pursue their studies in a developing country, including their own home country.

Program Period

  • The IMU Breakout Graduate Fellowship Program is a four-year program.

Coverage

The fellowship provides funding of up to USD 10,000 per year, covering:

  • Full tuition fees
  • Accommodation expenses
  • Travel expenses to the host institution (if different from the home country)
  • Basic living expenses based on the cost of living in the host country

Applicant Qualifications

To qualify for the IMU Breakout Graduate Fellowship Program, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be nominated by professional mathematicians, including retirees who continue to mentor young students
  • Must be residents and citizens of developing countries
  • Must be pre-accepted or enrolled in a doctoral program in mathematics in a developing country
  • There is no age limit for applicants
  • Nomination of female students is strongly encouraged

  • two recommendation letters which both cannot come from the nominator
  • transcripts
  • CV of nominee
  • motivation letter, research project, future plans
  • nominee, nominator, PhD supervisor declarations
