Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistants (FLTAs) Scholarship Program: Empowering Myanmar’s Educators

The Fulbright Program, operating under the umbrella of the US Department of State’s Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs, is an honorable international exchange program dedicated to the achievement of mutual understanding between the United States and other nations through education and cultural exchange.

The Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Scholarship Program grants a nine-month non-degree, fully funded opportunity for Myanmar young teachers of English to apply. The participants improve their English skills, their teaching techniques, and their overall cultural and social immersion while they themselves teach their native language to U.S. students.

Eligible Program

Selected FLTA scholars have the opportunity to participate in the program at various universities across the United States. While specific regions and universities may vary, participants engage in U.S. university classes and serve as teaching assistants for the Myanmar language.

Program Period

The Fulbright FLTA Scholarship Program embraces a duration of nine months, thus the participants will be given a comprehensive understanding of the educational system and diversity of the America.

Coverage

Participants in the Fulbright FLTA Scholarship Program receive full funding, including:

  • Tuition and related academic fees
  • Monthly stipend for living expenses
  • Health insurance coverage
  • Round-trip airfare to and from the United States
  • Opportunities for professional development and cultural enrichment activities

Applicant Qualifications

To be eligible for the Fulbright FLTA scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Citizenship of Myanmar
  • Residency in Myanmar throughout the nomination and selection process
  • Aged no older than 30 years
  • Teachers of English or in training to become English teachers
  • Hold at least a Bachelor’s degree (advanced degrees are also eligible)
  • Proficient in English, with specified minimum TOEFL or IELTS scores
  • Little or no previous experience traveling or living in the United States
  • No degree from a U.S. university or enrollment in a U.S. degree program

IMPORTANT: If there is any time during application or grant process when material misrepresentation takes place (such as plagiarism), then the selection is to be withdrawn and the participation in the future will not be possible. At the end of the grant period all participants must re-locate to their home country, for at least two years, as required by the J-1 visa.

Interested applicants are required to submit their applications via email to RangoonUSECA@state.gov. The application form and letter of reference can be obtained from the Cultural Affairs Unit or through the U.S. Embassy’s Facebook page.

The deadline for applications for the Fulbright FLTA Scholarship Program for the academic year 2024 has passed. Prospective applicants are encouraged to stay updated on future opportunities through the U.S. Embassy website and official channels.
